Geleikogeldiertje

Ophrydium versatile, het groen geleikogeldiertje. Als je in de Boschmolenplas ondiep duikt kun je tussen de waterplanten van alles tegen komen dat dieper niet te vinden is. Begin augustus vielen de groene bolletjes weer op. Nou ja, bolletjes, ze kunnen rond of niervormig zijn met allerlei uitstulpingen. Ze zijn groen en lijken hol. Dit zijn groene geleikogeldiertjes. Eigenlijk is de naam verkeerd gekozen want zo’n bol is geen dier maar bestaat uit heel veel eencelligen (protozoa) die samen de bol vormen. Bovendien behoren protozoa niet tot het dierenrijk.

Het geleikogeldiertje kan een doorsnede bereiken van 15 cm maar meestal zijn ze veel kleiner. In de bol zit een heldere gelei-achtige massa waar heel veel andere organismen in leven. De groene kleur krijgt de bol door algen die mogelijk samenwerken met het geleikogeldiertje. Of er een samenwerking is en hoe deze dan  precies verloopt is nog niet bekend. Mogelijk werken ze samen bij de verwerking van kooldioxide en koolhydraten. De individuele diertjes zijn in staat om microscopisch materiaal uit het water weg te vangen. Voor de fotosynyhese hebben de algen licht nodig en dit is de reden dat het geleikogeldiertje alleen in schoon, helder, ondiep water te vinden is. In de Boschmolenplas zit het groen geleikogeldiertje vaak vastgehecht aan planten maar ze zijn ook op stenen te vinden.

Soms laten ze los en gaan kapot, een individu kan dan weer uitgroeien tot een kolonie. Als je heel goed kijkt zie je dat de eencelligen heel mooi gerangschikt zijn op de oppervlakte van de bol en dat de bol doorzichtig is. Dit zijn goede kenmerken om ze niet te verwarren met de ronde algjes die ook in de Boschmolenplas te vinden zijn. Het groen geleikogeldiertje kan het hele jaar gevonden worden maar is in de zomer in de grootste aantallen aanwezig in de Boschmolenplas. Af en toe komen ze massaal voor.

Ophrydium versatile, the green jelly protozoa

If you do a shallow dive in the Boschmolenplas there are a lot of things you can encounter between the plants that can’t be found deeper. In the beginning of August the green balls where there again. Well, round, they can be round or kidney shaped with lots of humps. They are green and look hollow. These are green jelly protozoa. Actually the name is wrong because the green jelly protozoa isn’t an animal but consists of a whole lot of protozoa together forming the ball. Besides that protozoa aren’t animals.

The green jelly protozoa can reach a diameter of 15 cm but mostly they are much smaller. In the ball there is a jelly like mass in witch a lot of other species live. The ball gets the green color by alga  that possibly cooperate with the green jelly protozoa. If there is a  cooperation and how it would work is not known yet. Possibly they work together for processing carbon dioxide and carbohydrates. The protozoa itself are able to catch microscopic substance out of the water. The alga needs light for photosynthesis and that’s the reason the green jelly protozoa can only be found in clean, clear, shallow water. In the Boschmolenplas the green jelly protozoa is often attached to plants but can also be found on stones. Sometimes they  break loose and break up, if this happens then one individual is able to establish a new colony. If you look very closely you will see that the protozoa are very beautifully arranged on the surface of the ball and that the ball is transparent. These features are also good for not confusing them with the little green alga that also live in the Boschmolenplas. The green jelly protozoa can be found all year around but is summertime thy are most abundant in the Boschmolenplas. Now and then they come in massive numbers.
